Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What does independent home study mean?

A: All learning and review of the material in this online Life Writing Workshop takes place at home or other place of your choice. All writings and exercises and practices with grammar and punctuation are completed at your convenience.

You can work at your own pace, although the online course is designed to be completed in six weeks, and you're strongly encouraged to follow that schedule. Hopefully, you'll complete the course in less than six weeks; if additional time is needed, that's no problem either..

Q: What is a mentor?

A: A mentor is a trusted counselor or guide; a tutor or coach. Mentors for this online course are all experienced writers, most of whom have been published, some of whom teach college English courses, and who have demonstrated an ability to write well.

Q: What is the mentor’s role in this course?

A: In addition to providing you support and motivation, your mentor is an e-mail respondent and responsible for keeping you on track; that is, to be certain homework for each unit is completed, that journals are being kept and that portfolios are gradually filled with your writing outcomes on your floppy discs.

Your mentor will also edit your work, praising your accomplishments and making constructive suggestions, always seeking ways in which your writing can be enhanced and accurately represent your life experiences.

Q: How do I start?

A: Beginning with Unit 1, read and complete the materials in each of the units. Once you've successfully digested and responded to all six units and conferred with your mentor, you should be moving forward on your own independent highway to fulfill your personal life writing purposes.
